Paint
You can start with a simple Prang watercolor set.
It's not going to make you happy in the long run but you can learn a lot with it.
If you already have supplies, then use those. I don't require you to go buy the colors I'm suggesting. I've just condensed it down to a good starter set of colors.
I ask my students to buy Artists watercolor not student grade watercolor. I like Winsor and Newton, Daniel Smith, Sennelier, DaVinci and lots of other artists grade paints. Student grade paint is more binder and less pigment than artists paint.
Each manufacturer has their own formula. So the name of the color is not going to
mean that you will get exactly the same color. Manufacturers mix gum arabic with pigment to make watercolor. That same pigment might be mixed with linseed oil to make oil paint etc.
I usually suggest if you are going to use tube paints that you buy Daniel Smith because of their lower price point and high quality.
Suggested paint colors by Daniel Smith - These six colors are a good mix to start with. Burnt Sienna, New Gamboge, Cobalt Blue, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Pyrrol Scarlet, French Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow Light,

Here is a good way to buy and save a little:
Pictured is Daniel Smith’s Essentials Set
Hansa Yellow Light, New Gamboge, Quinacridone Rose, Pyrrol Scarlet, Phthalo Blue (green shade) and Ultramarine Blue.
If you buy this set, please add French Ultramarine Blue.
Also available are sets in tins and those are nice to have. Later on you may want to
switch to a bigger palette but a tin set is great for painting outside and for taking with you on trips.

Paint Tin example - I like this metal one because I love the colors that Joyce Hicks uses and this set is just now being offered. The colors in her paintings are amazing.
PAPER
I prefer Arches Cold Press 140 lb. Watercolor Paper pad 9x12. If you want to save some money, buy the Canson XL 140 lb watercolor paper pad. It is much less expensive but you will still be able to do most of the techniques.
DO NOT BUY CHEAP PAPER. It just won't work and you'll think it is you when it
is usually the papers fault. Strathmore has some good paper, I'm just not as familiar with that line.

This is Arches 140 lb cold pressed paper. It is my favorite paper to use. If you buy pads of 9 x 12, they aren't as expensive as blocks which are glued around the edges.
This is Canson's XL 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper. It is less expensive but still good enough for you to be able to do all the exercises.
Palette
You need something to put your paint on if you use tube paints and you need a large white area to mix that paint. A simple white plate will work. I use a watercolor palette by mjello or heritage like the one pictured to take back and forth to class. You want something that has little wells for your paints, a white area to mix the paints on and a cover if you are taking it to classes. There are inexpensive palettes that you might want to use until you get a feeling for what works for you.
I have a large Tom Jones type palette and I still like it when I’m painting but it was bulky to travel with. The mjello palettes are plastic, have a cover that is hinged and has a gasket so the paint cannot drip outside the palette. Paint doesn't run all over everything in my bag if it gets tipped.
