Learn to paint water that looks wet, reflective and splashy. With a stunning waterfall or stream as your model, you will learn how to paint water as it cascades, then splashes around and over a rocky pool or streambed. Techniques will be demonstrated to address the various puzzles with which the artist is faced when painting this fascinating and challenging subject. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend-the only prerequisite is your joy of painting!
Julie Gilbert Pollard is an experienced artist who has given watercolor classes for decades both around the United States and in Europe. She has published three books, including Watercolor Unleashed. I took classes from Julie over 15 years ago and, today, when I start to paint a waterfall, my mind goes back to what Julie taught me. She has a very clear way of breaking down those often difficult to paint subjects.
The workshop will be held in downtown Sisters, Oregon, a charming, western-themed town full of art galleries, shops and restaurants. Its picturesque setting at the foot of the Three Sisters mountains will provide abundant inspiration and beauty! Workshop venue and format:

- There will be class time plus one plein air session where we will travel to a waterfall or stream.
- Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all.
- There will be demonstrations and instruction at all levels and lots of painting time.
- The basic “anatomy” of a waterfall, water cascade and flowing water
- Special methods and techniques for painting water in the landscape
- How to use negative space in your painting
- Creative use of color - color mixing, painting with greens, using color as value
- How to use photos as inspiration for your own interpretation of reality
- Maintaining the plein air feel and sensitivity in your painting once back at the studio
- How to do simple studies of scenes so that you can spend more time on them back at the studio
