Learn to paint water that looks wet, reflective, and splashy! With a stunning waterfall or stream as your model, paint water as it cascades, then splashes around and over the rocky streambed. Techniques will be demonstrated to address the various puzzles with which the artist is faced when painting this stunning, fascinating and challenging subject!
What more fitting place than Sisters Oregon to showcase the extraordinary talents of Arizona artist, Julie Gilbert Pollard. Nestled in the Cascade Mountains, the charming town of Sisters will provide abundant material for painting. The two day workshop will be presented in The Hub  a prime downtown Sisters location. The Hub’s modern large open spaces and abundant light will provide the optimal painting and learning experience.
I took classes from Julie over 15 years ago and today when I start to paint a waterfall or a rock, my mind goes back to what Julie taught me. She has a very clear way of breaking down those often difficult to paint subjects.
This workshop team includes two very knowledgeable Sister residents who will share little known secrets of where to go, what to do during your free time in Sisters.

The focus of this workshop will be to combine studio painting with one plein air experience  where we will gather reference material through photos, sketches and some “light” plein air painting. An important concept of this workshop is that the joy of a plein air experience should be accessible to all. The equipment suggested is, therefore, of a minimal nature. Our overriding goal is to enjoy the experience as we immerse ourselves into and truly experience the landscape.

IN THE STUDIO - LESSONS WILL FOCUS ON:

  • Using material gathered during the plein air excursions for more carefully thought-out paintings - NOTE: In the case of inclement weather, reference photos will be supplied (to be shared electronically), or you may use your own.
  • Maintaining the plein air “feel” and sensitivity in your painting when back the in studio…
  • Using your reference photos as inspiration rather than absolute visual fact…
Note: you will be more than welcome to use Julie’s reference photo (to be shared electronically) and follow her steps OR use your own reference material OR do BOTH – applying the “follow-along” steps to your own composition.
  • Basic “anatomy” of a waterfall/water cascade…
  • Learn to paint rocks that look solid and hard…
  • The painting process – keeping it manageable…
  • Watercolor methods and techniques that apply to the subject-matter…
  • Negative painting lessons for watercolor…
  • Creative use of color – color mixing - painting with green - “using color as value” (as seen in her North Light Books and Videos)…

PLEIN AIR SESSIONS WILL FOCUS ON

You will be encouraged to find several scenes you would like to spend more time with later, in the studio, and doing simple studies for that purpose. Naturally, if you should decide to stay with one composition and develop it further, the choice is yours.
Julie wil spend time leading you through a process of simplifying the scene and the painting process.

There will be demos, instruction at all levels, critique and lots of painting time. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting!
