This is a fun class for beginners and intermediate artists who would like to have better control of the medium. I start with abstract paintings because watercolor has unique qualities unlike other mediums. In the past, I started with something realistic like a lemon just like other instructors. I noticed that my students were frustrated because it didn't end up looking like the lemon they wanted because it was their first attempt. They also didn't get a real understanding of how to manage the water to pigment level which is the most important part. You are basically painting with water and adding different amounts of pigment based on the outcome you'd like. It is better to gain some experience in controlling the water level of the paint before attempting to paint a realistic subject. We paint a rock cairn, then we will do the painting shown. You do not need drawing skills for this exercise. At the end of the class you will also paint a very simple realistic landscape or work on leaves. I like to have both a floral and a landscape exercise in each class. Between classes, I have email, video and Zoom check ins to help keep motivation high.
Please do not buy any supplies until we have a discussion. Watercolor takes good materials to get the results you want. I can help you find those supplies without a great deal at a reasonable cost or you can purchase a basic kit from me.
